SPEAK Returns to CRCF for Fall Program!
SPEAK volunteers eagerly re-entered the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility (CRCF) this September to begin our Fall 2024 session. Our small but steady attendance grew as participants persuaded others to join us throughout the month, and we now have a group of 3-5 students joining our SPEAK volunteers each week. Our participants expressed both intrigue and fear around debate and public speaking, but we learned to tailor SPEAK's curriculum materials to best meet their goals.
One of the most valuable components of the SPEAK program is the final debate - a debate on a topic of the participants' choice. Choosing the topic provides an opportunity for group engagement and community building. Participants then collaborate with volunteers throughout the program to research and prepare for the final debate. This fall, participants considered a series of potential topics and ultimately selected decriminalizing substance use in Vermont. As part of preparation for this debate, SPEAK participants discussed various debate tactics, including the merits of personal anecdotes and case studies.
We are thrilled about our final debate in mid-November. However, we are even more excited to see our participants and volunteers continue to foster a love of learning through debate! Stay tuned to hear more about the final debate!
